Purpose: Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), born a slave in Dorcherter
County, Maryland, was known as the "Moses of her people" and the
conductor of the Underground Railroad. She escaped to free soil in
Penn. in 1849 and later made 19 trips back into slave contry at great
personal rick. She is credited with helping more than 300 slaves escape to freedom. She was also a Civil War Nurse.
