Purpose: In honor of the Internationa Red Cross, the international
society formed as a result of the Geneva Convention (on Wars) in 1864, which seeks to care for the sick in war, to secure neutrality for medical facilities and to aid in times of national disaster. This stamp was the first two color (bi-colored) stamps every printed by the US on the rotary press.
